Heritage Lottery Fund supports education at Petersfield Museum

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has awarded a grant of £50,000 over two years to employ an education and outreach officer at Petersfield Museum, it was announced today.

The award will allow the Museum to employ a full time education and outreach officer who will work on education projects in Petersfield and the surrounding area. The Museum will be recruiting over the next couple of months and it is hoped that there will be an officer in place by autumn 2008 who will be based at the Museum.

This post will allow the Museum to work closely with the local schools giving them access to information on the local history of the area in help and to include culture in the children’s learning.  The officer will organise visits by schools to the Museum and also create historical loans boxes which school will be able to use in their own environments to aid learning.

The officer will be giving all ages the opportunity to learn more about their area, by conducting talks to community groups and taking objects out into the community for handling sessions, for example, the newly acquired Bedales historical costume collection will be utilised more fully by students studying textiles, art and design.

Commenting on the award, Vaughan Clarke, Chairman of Petersfield Museum Trust said, “

Michelle Davies, Head of HLF in the South East, said:

"We are passionate about bringing the past to life for new generations and this is a great example of what can be done.   The new Education and Outreach Officer will have the chance to use a wealth of historical artefacts to give people from all walks of life a hands on experience of their local heritage."
