Team comprises: Curator, 50 volunteers
Salary: £18,000-£19,000
Term: 2 years full time contract (HLF funded post)
Hours Of Work Standard Business Hours are 9.00am – 5.00 pm Monday to Friday, however this post will require some flexibility as evening and weekend work will be required. Time in Lieu will be given.
Annual Leave 27 Days – inclusive of 9 days public holidays
Appointment Conditional upon receipt of two satisfactory work references, proof of
right to work in
UK and successful completion of 3 month probationary period. This role is subject to Disclosure clearance.

Job Description – Education and Outreach Officer
Summary
This post has been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for 2 years. It is intended to seek a further grant at the end of the period. This is a local history role of both formal and informal education programmes where you will play an active role in the delivery and further development of our Education Programme.
In the main you will deliver different elements of the established Education Programme in the Museum. This role is key in contributing to the development of local history related programmes, the production of supporting educational materials and the sourcing of teaching equipment and resources. Some of your time will be spent out in the community giving lectures. You will be an integral member of a small but dynamic team where you will work in part, to a determined schedule and in part on projects where self management is required.
Duties
· Build up school resources including information sheets/worksheets/ Visitor booking resources /Education Packs (comprising Teachers’ Packs and Pupils’ Packs) and developing the Education sections of the website. Liaising with teacher and other educational representatives/organisations and soliciting feedback to ensure the Education programme and educational resources are focused, relevant, appropriately targeted to the curriculum and topical.
· Take collections out into the community (talks/workshops) to interest groups and colleges.
· Create resources for family groups (quiz sheets/ interactive activities).
· Increase the number of users of museum facilities and resources, through active promotion.
· Enhance the experience of users through improved communication and provision of information.
· Create a volunteer education team with existing and new volunteers.
· Deliver the Schools Education Programme including teaching different workshops, lectures and storytelling activities in line with the Curriculum.
· Ensure that all educational equipment and resources are properly maintained and that usage is properly recorded and managed.
· Deal with education enquiries, coordinating all pre-booked education visits, administering the Education Service booking systems and ensuring minimal conflict with other bookings i.e. non-school group and corporate bookings.
· Attend education exhibitions, conferences and presentations as required.
· Update your own knowledge of the material interpreted within the Museum and the curriculum, on an ongoing basis in order to deliver the highest quality Education Programme. In particular the Museum wishes to promote and utilise more fully key collections (for example the Bedales historic costume collection)
· Ensure that correct budgetary control, invoicing and follow up procedures are followed, in conjunction with the Curator.
· Create educational special events and activities and contribute as required to any other special events and exhibitions.
· Ensure that the needs of the HLF are covered by providing evidence in the form of statistics and photographs.
· Provide cover within the Museum as required. Deputise for the Curator in her absence.
· Any other Educational Services as required.
Desired Experience/Qualities
You should have an enthusiasm for communicating with children. An ability to communicate historical information with a sense of passion, accuracy and fun is essential as is the ability to participate in the development of our education programme. While a degree, teaching qualification or experience of delivering an education programme/children’s activities would be advantageous but it is not essential.
You should be able to demonstrate a high level of self-confidence in working with groups of children and adults and should have an affinity with children of all ages. You should be comfortable working as part of a small and dynamic team where you will be responsible for managing large amounts of your own time and a small team of volunteers.
PERSONAL SPECIFICATION
You must be enthusiastic, warm and friendly, with excellent communication skills and a genuine interest in local and social history. A positive and mature attitude is essential as this role requires a real self starter who works best under their ‘own steam’.
